The prefix `21` before each six-digit Maltacom number and the replacement of the old `09` with the prefix `99` on all Vodafone numbers will become compulsory as from tomorrow.

The Malta Communications Authority said that as from tomorrow, only the new telephone numbers will be in operation, in accordance with the parameters laid down in the Numbering Plan for the Maltese Islands.

The new telephone numbers were introduced last November. A six month `parallel running period`, wherein both old and new numbers could be used, ends today.

As from tomorrow, the new directory enquiry service numbers will be: 1182 for Maltacom directory services; 1187 for go mobile directory services; 1189 for Vodafone directory services.

All go mobile numbers remain unchanged and therefore still retain the `79` prefix.

The authority urged the public to inform friends and relatives overseas of the changes that have taken place.

Further information may be acquired by phoning the Malta Communications Authority on freephone 0 800 77 3120.
