Nature Trust has commended the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for refusing an application for a new quarry at il-Mizieb, in Hal Far, a short distance from an area of conservation of international importance and Wied Moqbol.

The quarry would have eaten into agricultural land and destroyed dozens of protected carob trees, the NGO said.

The cliff and valley area has suffered extensive damage both in terms of degradation due to copious amounts of dust as well as from high noise levels and blasting from a quarry nearby, it added.

Nature Trust said it hoped that an application for an extension of the current quarry at Wied Moqbol will be turned down.
