New square inaugurated as Msida Creek project reaches new milestone
The new square in front of the church replaces traffic lanes
A new square has been inaugurated in front of Msida parish church, marking another milestone in the ongoing roads and embellishment project.
The Infrastructure Ministry said the new square and sections of the waterfront promenade had been completed as promised before the annual feast, providing residents and visitors with a modern and safe public space while giving a fresh identity to one of the town's most central areas.
Feast celebrations began last weekend with activities for children and families, as well as the installation of the traditional Ġostra, a popular attraction among Msida residents.
Infrastructure, Planning and Works Minister Jonathan Attard, accompanied by Infrastructure Malta chief executive Steve Ellul and members of the local council, visited the site.
Attard said he was satisfied that deadlines related to the delivery of the square had been met, allowing residents to celebrate the feast in a better environment than in previous years.
Work on other parts of the Msida Creek project is continuing. Final works are underway on the area behind the square to ensure that the traditional feast procession can take place as planned.
Ellul said the opening of the square marked another significant step towards the completion of the project.
"This is another important achievement for the Msida project because we are delivering new open spaces that Msida never had before. The square alone covers almost 2,200 square metres, making it roughly comparable in size to St George's Square, and it has replaced what were previously four traffic lanes," he said.
