Ta’ Qali to get new 'better organised' Farmers’ Market and food hub

Market will be more 'accessible' space with an eatery that will also become a tourist attraction

A  new Farmers’ Market will be built in Ta’ Qali creating a permanent and modern space where Maltese farmers can sell directly to the public in an “organised and accessible environment”.

The project was announced on Thursday by the agriculture ministry and the Malta Food Agency during a meeting with farmers at the project site in Ta’ Qali.

A ministry statement said the new Farmers’ Market will “transform Ta’Qali into a vibrant agricultural and food destination where Maltese products will not only be sold but also celebrated and experienced. “

“This will strengthen the direct connection between what is produced in Maltese fields and what reaches family tables.”

The project will feature an “eatery” dedicated to local food, putting the farm-to-fork concept into practice and will be designed as an open and inclusive space for families, tourists and visitors.

The space will also serve as a platform to promoted Malta’s culinary identity and the diversity of local produce.

Deputy prime minister Ian Borg, who attended the meeting, said the project “gives farmers the showcase they deserve so their work can achieve tis highest value and be presented directly to Maltese families and businesses as a top-quality product which is genuinely good.”

He added that while the Farmers’ Market will create more opportunities for Maltese families to buy fresher fruit and vegetables directly from farmers, the project will also become a tourist attraction, particularly for visitors drawn to the islands by their rich gastronomy.

“As we see in many other countries, this Farmers’ Market will certainly become a magnet for tourists looking for genuinely Maltese products and flavours, directly from the people who grow them,” Borg added.

Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo said the project represents a concrete step towards a stronger and more modern agricultural sector.

He added the project forms part of a broader vision for a more resilient, innovative and sustainable agricultural sector that prioritises food security and the promotion of local produce.

Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia explained that the Public Works Department will carry out the project, building a “more organised and modern space where produce can be sold in a better and more comfortable environment throughout the year.”
