NGOs urge government to ensure Malta not used in US attack on Iran
Nine groups call on authorities to uphold neutrality and international law
Nine NGOs have called on the Maltese government to ensure that the country’s ports, airports and infrastructure are not used to support the United States’ attack on Iran, urging authorities to uphold Malta’s neutrality.
Led by Ġustizzja għall-Palestina, the organisations are also calling on the government to “affirm its commitment” to international law and human rights amid the escalating war in Iran and the wider Middle East.
“In respect to Malta’s neutrality principle, it needs to commit that no use of our ports, airports or other infrastructure is to be used to support/facilitate the US attack on Iran,” the activists said.
The groups are organising a protest in front of the US embassy on Saturday at 3pm, urging the government to uphold its constitutional duty to “actively pursue peace and security by condemning this illegal war on Iran, Lebanon and Palestine”.
In a statement on Friday, the activists insisted Israel’s new war on Iran is “unlawful”.
“We stand united in calling these attacks as they are. They are not ‘pre-emptive strikes’ but they are unilateral actions and blatant breaches of international law. No country has a right to attack another country,” the NGOs said.
The statement was endorsed by Lebanese Advocates, Ġustizzja għall-Palestina, Moviment Graffitti, Watermelon Warriers, Speakup Malta!, Grupp Newtralita u Paċi, Front Maltin Inqumu, Alleanza għall-Ġustizzja, Ugwaljanza u Paċi, Dance Beyond Borders.
