Social Solidarity and Family Minister Dolores Cristina said she will be proposing to Cabinet a White Paper on legislation that would give non-governmental organisations a legal basis.

The minister, who was speaking during the presentation of funds to NGOs, said the proposed law was one of her ministry's priorities. The proposal for a White Paper could be made now that extensive work on the regulation of and assistance to NGOs had been completed.

Through such legislation, NGOs would be set up on a legal basis empowering them to do their work in the best way possible while offering better protection to both their clients and the public.

The proposals take into consideration the points moved by NGO representatives, Mrs Cristina said.
