The third calendar night event organised by the Malta Drag Racing Association (MDRA) was staged last weekend at the Ħal Far raceway.
The humid hot nights did not keep away the enthusiastic crowds who turned out for the thrilling two-night event. Racing began rather early but once the lights came on, the fun began and the smell of burning rubber and racing fuel filled the air.
Visitors walked in the paddock where the customary Ford Escorts were all lined up. Gone are the times when power is of utmost importance. The organisers should hand out a prize for the best paint job. The detail and theme of each car's paintwork is remarkable. Once again, a group of enthusiasts from the UK travelled to Malta to race their machines. The Maltese participants gave a fantastic show and registered some very good times, especially on the Saturday.
The dragsters were back in force with some newcomers effecting installation runs. Borg Brothers, one of the veteran dragster racing teams, had their dragster in the running again.
Both the Maksar Racing Team and EVS Racing Team thronged the crowds with some excellent truck racing.
Racing continued until very late in the evening and the crowd stayed, waiting for more. It is a pity that the event is not given more coverage. As it is held during the summer, it is an attraction that could have broad appeal.
