Your leader last Sunday on smoking restrictions was more than correct. The survey carried out by The Sunday Times has confirmed, if there was any need to, the opinion of the great majority about these new regulations.
The medical professionion has been calling for a total ban on smoking in enclosed public places since the proposal for the change in regulations has been made because every year the lives of hundreds of patients are ruined by passive smoking.
As doctors we see the effects of second-hand smoke every day. We are the ones telling patients that they have cancer or heart disease. We are the ones who witness their worlds falling apart. Partial bans will not go far enough. What about the lives and health of people who work in pubs and clubs? They have the same right to life and health as other workers.
Any pressure from the leisure and tobacco industry to remove this total ban must be resisted.
