Rumours that a detention centre for illegal immigrants is to be set up in Gozo were unfounded, Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said in reply to a parliamentary question.
Labour MP Justyne Caruana had asked in Parliament whether it was true that some illegal migrants were to be transferred from Malta to Gozo.
Dr Borg said illegal migration was a national problem which the government was committed to address in the most effective manner possible. The number of detention centres depended on the number of migrants who arrived in Malta over the coming months. The plan, however, was that these would be accommodated in a new complex about to be completed within Safi Barracks.
Dr Borg said in reply to another question, by Adrian Vassallo (MLP) that 1,569 illegal immigrants have arrived in Malta so far this year, and a total of 1,617 migrants are being held in detention centres.
