Northwest Airlines Corp., which announced last week it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, said over the weekend its common stock would cease trading on the Nasdaq, effective September 26.
The fourth-largest US airline said that, as of the opening of business today, the company's trading symbol will include a fifth character, Q, to become NWACQ. Last Wednesday, Northwest and competitor Delta Air Lines filed for bankruptcy protection, joining rivals United Airlines and US Airways, which have already been operating under Chapter 11.
Northwest and Delta had been struggling with soaring oil prices and competition from low-cost rivals such as Southwest Airlines.
Northwest, which is involved in a labour dispute with its mechanics, has said it will operate normally despite the bankruptcy protection filing.
