A Zabbar man has been cleared of defaming the judge who presided over his brother's trial.

Carmelo Bugeja, 55, was cleared of uttering words with the intention to damage the reputation of Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono who was presiding over the trial of his brother, Saviour, over arson.

Bugeja was charged with committing the offence at the law courts on November 17 after Mr Justice Galea Debono ordered the police to investigate allegations that Bugeja was heard saying he would "go get him".

Magistrate Denis Montebello cleared Bugeja on the grounds that the words did not constitute efamation.

Dr Tony Abela appeared for Bugeja.
