With reference to the letter by Janet Barthet (February 7) and referring also to similar letters published earlier in this paper, I would like to make it clear, once and for all, that the allegations made in my respect are completely and utterly unfounded.

On the eve of Joseph Muscat's election as leader of the Labour Party, I had the opportunity to explain publicly on Xarabank, the popular Friday TV programme, why I was not involved in politics at the time of the EU referendum.

Besides, I have to state that during the same period I was completely devoted to my ailing mother, attending to her daily needs. This can be vouched for by the caring staff and the other residents of Villa Messina, where my dear mother spent the last years of her life.

My non-involvement in politics at the time of the EU referendum was commented upon by Michael Falzon, former Nationalist MP, in his regular Sunday contribution in Malta Today on August 31, when he stated: "...and Maria Camilleri being invited by Joseph Muscat himself to stand as candidate for the European Parliament elections next June. With the exception of Maria Camilleri, who never made public her position on relations with the EU (if, indeed she has a position)..."

Hopefully, the above clarification does away with any wrong impressions that certain quarters seem hell-bent on lumbering me with.

I strongly advise whoever claims otherwise to be ready to come up with the facts.
