'Not a level playing field': Momentum's electoral campaign banner removed

The party said the banner, hung above the Santa Venera tunnels, was removed by the Cleansing Department

Momentum has launched its election street campaign, only to have one of its banners promptly removed by the Cleansing Department, the party said on Monday.

The party said the banner was hung above the Santa Venera tunnels.

Just last month, the Ombudsman rapped Transport Malta over its poor handling of a request by Momentum to run a political banner on a busy road.

The Ombudsman said that while the transport regulator’s decision was not arbitrary, its failure to communicate with the political party to justify the refusal was a case of maladministration.

Momentum sought Transport Malta permission in August 2025 to affix a banner by the Santa Venera tunnels, having received council approval for the plan.

Momentum's Arnold Cassola explained on Monday that permits are not required for banners put up three months ahead of an election.

The removal of the banner over the weekend, Momentum added, raised serious questions about the kind of democracy we were living in, and highlighted the disadvantage small political parties faced when contesting elections.

"While government propaganda dominates public spaces, smaller political parties are denied even the basic visibility of a simple banner. This is not a level playing field.

"Momentum believes in fair participation and equal opportunity in politics. We will not be discouraged by these actions."

Despite being one of the youngest political parties in Malta, Momentum was committed to continuing this challenge throughout the election.

"We will keep reaching out to people, amplifying voices that feel ignored, and standing up for a more just and democratic system," Momentum's Mark Camilleri Gambin said.
