The only first at the extension to the Delimara power station is the combination of specific diesel engines and an abatement technology, Enemalta said in a statement this evening.
It said that at no point during the Malta Environment and Planning Authority public meeting did its engineer Peter Grima state that the technology being used at Delimara was untested or being applied for the first time.
"On the contrary, he actually explained that that there are examples of diesel engines and other generating plants using similar technology worldwide."
Enemalta said that the abatement technology was also not new.
"There is a large diesel engine plant in Korea which is already equipped with NOx, SOx and dust abatement equipment that has been working perfectly well for some four years now and is similar to what is being installed at Delimara."
Enemalta said that enough is known about both technologies from experience elsewhere to accurately predict how the combination of the two would work out.
It is unfounded to say that anything “experimental” is being done at Delimara, the corporation said.
