The Foreign Ministry has introduced a voluntary notification service whereby those Maltese who are abroad for more than a month will give their contact details to the ministry so that they may be traced in case of some calamity.

The ministry said all information will remain confidential.

The system, known as Notification D, follows the same lines as other systems abroad.

The ministry said the turmoil caused by the Arab Spring had reinforced the need for the government to have a system where it could quickly contact Maltese abroad and assist them when necessary.

The system can be accessed online at www.foreign.gov.mt

Details should be sent to the nearest Malta High Commission, Embassy or Consulate or directly to the director, the Directorate for the Maltese Living Abroad at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Merchants' Street, Valletta.
