The number of dependent elderly is on the increase and only 22 per cent of those who resided at St Vincent De Paul Residence were independent, Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea said.
Addressing a seminar for those involved in offering services to the elderly, Mr Galea said his secretariat was working to address the prevailing challenges.
He pointed out that, at the moment, there were 3,842 beds for the elderly within the government, Church and private sector. However, this was not enough and 150 more beds a year were needed.
The seminar was geared to give participants the chance to discuss the vision of the secretariat and the Department for the Elderly while presenting their own suggestions.
