The short letter by Mario Dingli under the title "Number plates" (September 3) made amusing reading.

If, as he says, the ring of yellow stars on a blue background "do not represent" the European Union, but the "Council of Europe membership", was it just by coincidence that this emblem or flag was introduced on our car number plates very soon after the PN government signified its intention to join the European Union?

Are we also to believe that the same flag which is now fluttering over all the PN clubs throughout Malta and Gozo, is there to remind us that Malta has been a member of the Council of Europe for 30 years, if I remember correctly, and not because the PN government wants Malta to join the EU?
