Uno nightclub gets Ta' Qali lease extended for 50 years

Parliament approves lease extension to popular nightclub for €126k annual groundrent

Uno Malta's lease on Ta’ Qali government land has been extended by another 50 years, after parliament gave the go-ahead to issue a new lease on the site of the popular nightclub.

The new lease will also cover a tract of land that the company behind the club - Odel Co. Ltd - had previously occupied illegally. The company will pay a fine to regularise that.

Parliament's National Audit Office Accounts committee unanimously agreed to grant the lease extension despite the committee's two Opposition MPs, Stanley Zammit and Dareen Carabott, both raising concerns about noise pollution.

Located in Ta Qali, Uno Malta (formerly Numero Uno) is one of Malta’s most popular party spots outside of Paceville, often hosting well-known DJs and large events.

What UNO will pay

The government had granted a lease to the venue’s controlling company back in 1976. That deal will expire on May 31, 2028 and the company that now owns the club is currently paying €32,144 a year for it.

Under the new concession agreement, Odel will pay €126,212 a year. That rate will go up by 10 per cent every year, as stated in law.

Odel had also developed 862 square metres of the 5,435 square metre site illegally, without having any legal title over it. For that infraction, the company will pay a penalty of €431,000.

The lease agreement will take effect after the Lands Authority and Odel sign the new contract.

Odel is a joint venture between local company 356 Entertainment Group and UK-based entertainment behemoth Live Nation.

According to public filings, the Maltese partners in the venture are Trevor Camilleri, Edward Zammit Tabona, Francesca Manduca, Gerald Debono and Nicholas Spiteri.
