Nurses at St Luke's and Karin Grech hospitals may be given additional directives by the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) next week.

Contacted yesterday, MUMN general secretary Colin Galea said the strike action was still going strong and unless things changed, the union would be reviewing its directives early next week.

From Monday, nurses have been following union directives not to move from their ward, unit or operating theatre at the two hospitals and outpatients' department. They were also directed to only partially clean patients if the nurses' complement in the medicine and surgical wards was not reached.

Mr Galea said there had not been any contacts with the hospital authorities yet and added that the actions would go on until necessary and stepped up if needed.

"We wanted to give the authorities a week's notice, until Sunday, and then the union council will be evaluating the situation and acting accordingly," he said.
