A top-notch line-up of Old Edwardian sportsmen competed against present students on St Edward's Day as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of St Edward's College.
Former students participating in the event on Wednesday included personalities such as Kevin Decesare, Beppe Trigona, Alex Bianchi, Louis John Camilleri, Abraham Baldacchino and Jeremy Gambin for basketball, David Cluett, Andrew Hogg, Sean Sullivan, Edward Aquilina and Brian Said for football and Xandru Grech, Kevin Tonna and Joseph Zerafa for cross country.
Over the last 75 years, the college has earned an international reputation for the breadth and quality of the educational experience it offers. Students are encouraged to develop initiative and ambition in pursuing worthwhile goals, to confront difficulties with determination, to accept success with modest satisfaction and failure with equanimity.
Throughout its history, the college provided the country with some leading sportsmen.
Among other distinguished Old Edwardian sportsmen attending the event were Lewis Portelli, Nestor Jacono (who participated in the 1948 Olympic Games), Austin Cassar Torregiani (who participated in the 1936 Olympic Games), Michael Bonello (who held the Malta high jump record for about 30 years) and Dennis Degiorgio (famous Malta and Sliema waterpolo player). A commentary by Charles Mock took place throughout the games.
Following the games, Pippo Psaila, a governor, announced the winners and Education Minister Louis Galea presented a commemorative medal to all athletes.
Martin Scicluna, chairman of the board of governors, launched an initiative to establish the St Edward's College Hall of Fame, being taken as part of the college's 75th anniversary. He said the college has seen this as an "apt and fitting tribute to the school's 75-year record in providing some of Malta's most outstanding athletes, coaches, educators and administrators on a national and international level".
