Omar Caruana appointed European Prosecutor for Malta within EPPO
Office responsible for bringing to justice authors, accomplices of crimes against financial interests of the EU
The government said on Monday that Omar Caruana has been appointed as the European Prosecutor for Malta within the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).
This comes as the Council of the European Union has just appointed the European Prosecutor representing Malta to form part of the EPPO.
Caruana was appointed following a national public call and a selection process at the European level.
Caruana will now be stationed in Luxembourg in his role as European Prosecutor for Malta.
This office is responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and bringing to justice the authors or accomplices of crimes against the financial interests of the European Union.
It is also responsible for offences of fraud, misappropriation, corruption, and cross-border VAT fraud exceeding €10 million.
This is an ambitious project that Malta was among the first member states to join in 2018, the justice ministry said in a statement.
So far, there are 24 member states participating in the EPPO.
European prosecutors oversee the investigations and prosecutions of crimes affecting the European budget, together with the European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Codruța Kövesi.
