Ombudsman rules in favour of Infrastructure Malta on Marsascala promenade works

Marsascala residents, Momentum have cried foul over the works across the promenade

The Ombudsman found no issue with Infrastructure Malta’s works on the Marsascala promenade.

Over the last few months, Marsascala residents and the political party Momentum have cried foul over the works on the promenade, claiming they are being carried out as part of an unpermitted project to build a ferry terminal.

Infrastructure Malta, however, said that their interventions are emergency works due to concerns about the structural stability of the promenade and nearby structures.

The agency similarly justified the demolition of a row of arches on the Marsascala seafront, saying they were a danger to the public.

The Ombudsman investigated the matter following a complaint. It is unclear who filed the complaint.

The office found that Infrastructure Malta acted within the law, as the works required were truly urgent.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett, welcomed the Ombudsman's ruling.

“Following doubts raised by a number of NGOs regarding the regularity of the permits for the project, it is important for the public to know that the work is being carried out in the most transparent manner and in accordance with the law,” Bonett said.

Bonett said he had no doubts that Infrastructure Malta conducts itself in a correct and legal manner.

“I appeal not to try to undermine a project that serves the common good, even by instilling fear, simply because it is being carried out by the government.

“This is a project that will bring nothing but benefit to Marsascala and the south of Malta… just as this government has always done for the south,” he said.
