One mountain climber was killed and about 10 were believed to be trapped under snow after they were caught by an avalanche in northeast Turkey, broadcaster CNN Turk reported today.

The avalanche occurred in the Zigana district of Gumushane province, it said.

Broadcaster NTV reported the provincial governor as saying five people had been rescued and efforts were continuing to free others trapped under the snow from a group of 10 to 15 climbers.
