A 46-year-old man was seriously injured in a boat fire in Delimara.

Reports of a boat in distress in the Marsaxlokk area came in at around 11.45am, police said, with an ambulance being dispatched to treat the injured person.

The man, from Żurrieq, was found in the sea - around a mile and a half away from the coast. Armed Forces of Malta personnel and Civil Protection Department officials pulled him out of the water and onto a rescue boat.

He was taken to shore, where he was given first aid.

The man was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was certified to have suffered serious injuries.

Photos and video of the vessel posted online on Wednesday morning show the boat billowing thick black plumes of smoke all over Delimara Bay.

A magisterial inquiry and police investigations are ongoing.
