On April 2, 1736, the Rev. Don Filippo Bonici commissioned 33-year-old architect Andrea Belli from Valletta to design a stately home in Valletta and Domenico Cachia, a master mason from Żejtun, to build the stately mansion designed by Belli.
The result was a large, corner, palatial building on three floors laden with Baroque features. It is situated at the corner of Triq l-Ifran with Triq it-Teatru next to the Manoel Theatre. The main feature of the palazzo is the large wooden balcony which extends round the corner into both Triq l-Ifran and Triq it-Teatru.
This building was partly destroyed by enemy action during the blitz of 1942, and subsequently restored.
Some years ago it was linked to the Manoel Theatre and serves as a cafeteria and offices among other uses.
Mepa scheduled Palazzo Bonici as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice No. 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
