Chapel of the Holy Family's Flight from Egypt
This small, richly decorated Baroque chapel was built in 1757 as part of the Pinto Stores overlooking Grand Harbour. Although the façade is restricted in width, it has a high concentration of architectural elements and decorative features. Above the main entrance portal, a curvilinear window is defined by decorative stone moulding and at the sides by slightly protruding pilasters. Two horizontal moulded cornices define this upper level.
The chapel is crowned centrally by a segmental pediment above which the raised centrepiece sits. The closely spaced twin bell-towers that flank this centrepiece contribute to the vertical accentuation of the chapel's façade, and sit on two broken segmental pediments which emphasise the centrepiece.
The Chapel was restored during the 1980s and early 2000.
Mepa scheduled the Chapel of the Holy Family's Flight from Egypt as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice number 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
