Online facility for payment of contributions

The Department of Inland Revenue has introduced a new service for the payment of provisional tax and social security contributions.

As from this month, provisional tax and social security contributions (Class 2) due by individuals can be paid online using the Internet facility through the department's Website www.ird.gov.mt.

This new service gives individuals the facility to pay online by means of a credit or debit card. This facility, which is part of the e-Government project, will be extended to companies and for other types of taxes.

To effect payment, customers have to access the Inland Revenue Website and go to the online payment page. Then, one has to key in the payment reference, which is printed on the provisional tax payment form, in the appropriate field.

The payment reference has been designed to incorporate all the information required and necessary for the payment to take place. After one enters the payment reference number, the Website will display all the details of the payment one is making.

This facility utilises the electronic Payment Gateway (ePG) implemented by Government, which has in-built security features that safeguard the confidentiality of the personal information as well as the details of the credit/debit card used for payments. The ePG currently accepts Visa, Mastercard and Bank of Valletta Cashlink Card.

Customers using this service may be notified by e-mail with the details of the payment effected and the transaction reference. A formal receipt will also be sent by normal post.

After making payment, a transaction reference will be given. This must be quoted in the future if any queries arise. Such a system ensures that one does not make mistakes in the inputting of information, as the Website incorporates the checking of customer details features.

The Department of Inland Revenue encourages its customers to use this service as it offers a number of benefits. Those using this service need not go to the department and queue; will be assured that the payment is effected on time; will not incur unnecessary penalties; and will receive immediate confirmation of payment.
