One nomination for Siġġiewi council seat vacated by Francine Farrugia

Stephanie Vassallo is seeking to be elected to replace former PN councillor charged with embezzlement

The casual election to elect a councillor in Siġġiewi following the resignation of Francine Farrugia has received one nomination, that of Stephanie Vassallo.

As the nominations period closed after three days, the Electoral Commission said on Thursday that Vassallo’s was the only name submitted.

Vassallo was the only Nationalist Party candidate eligible to seek to replace PN councillor Francine Farrugia who resigned last week from all roles within the party after being charged in court with embezzling €2.3 million from MCAST where she took care of payroll.

The counting of ballot papers will be held on Tuesday August 19 at 9am at the Counting Hall complex in Naxxar.

Siġġiewi mayor Julian Borg had told Times of Malta he felt “surprised” and “hurt” that a councillor from his town and the same party had been charged with fraud.

Vassallo is a Money Laundering Reporting Officer at Fexserv Fund Services. She joined the company in 2015 as fund accountant following previous roles held with other operators in the funds industry locally.

She is also an assistant group scout leader of the Siġġiewi scout group.
