Open day at Victoria’s Adult Learning Centre
Works on display ranged from ganutell and Maltese bobbin lace to colourful mosaics and pottery
The Victoria Adult Learning Centre opened its doors to the public as the Directorate for Lifelong Learning and Employability (DLE) hosted its annual open day in Gozo – an event that highlighted the artistic expression, craftsmanship and dedication of adult learners across the island.
The exhibition unfolded quietly across familiar classrooms, now transformed into spaces of creativity and reflection.
The works on display, from finely executed handcrafted objects such as the intricate ganutell and the delicate Maltese bobbin lace, to expressive artistic pieces such as colourful mosaics and pottery, revealed time, patience and a willingness to learn anew.
These were works shaped not only through skill, but through a passion for seeking beauty under the vigilant eyes of dedicated educators.
A strong sense of continuity stood out, where traditional techniques and contemporary expressions complemented each other. The result reflects care, patience and a deep understanding of materials, sustained through institutions like the Directorate of Lifelong Learning, which preserves traditions and fosters a community of learners.
Conversations with learners and educators revealed a calm, reflective environment. For many – adults and young adults – returning to learning was less about achievement and more about reconnection with materials, ideas and onself. The Gozo Open Day did not merely display learning; it affirmed its crucial place within everyday life.
An open day will also be held at the Learning Centre in Triq il-Qrejten, Msida (corner with Junior College), on Saturday, April 25, from 10am to 4pm. The public is invited to participate in taster sessions by booking online. For more information follow the DLE Facebook and website www.lifelonglearning.gov.mt.
