The Opposition leader was choosing to defend former Birkirkara mayor Michael Fenech Adami, the Nationalist Party deputy leader’s brother, who was found to have committed financial irregularities during his mayorship tenure, the Labour Party’s deputy leader Chris Cardona said today.
An investigation by the board found that Mr Fenech Adami broke public procurement rules in issuing contracts for road resurfacing, car rentals and cleaning services without following established procedures. Mr Fenech Adami said the findings were politically motivated.
Addressing a news conference, Dr Cardona said that although PN leader Simon Busuttil spoke a lot on good governance, he did not take action when faced with such cases but defended them.
The PN leader had also failed to take action in a case involving shadow minister Chris Said’s brothers.
The Opposition leader, Dr Cardona said, attacked every institution which did not say what he wanted to hear with deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami attacking the Police Commissioner, the Attorney General and the Governance Board only this morning.
Dr Cardona asked if the PN had confidence in Noel Bartolo, who managed the board. The board, he said, had been used so much by the Nationalist media when there were reports on Labour mayors.
