The General Workers Union said spectacle frames manufacturing firm Menrad will be discharging 27 employees in various grades and sections because of a drop in orders in its foreign markets.

In a statement the union said it was informed by Menrad it was not possible for the company to accept the union's request to introduce a reduced working week or to retrain workers in order to avoid the discharges.

Menrad however said that the discharges and other measures, such as downgradings, would be effected in line with provisions of the law and that the workers concerned would be given all their dues.

The union said it has contacted the Employment and Training Corporation in an effort to find alternative work for the workers who were being discharged.
