The international artistic director and cast of the upcoming opera Otello were in Gozo yesterday to start rehearsals at the Astra Theatre, where the show will be staged on November 1.

Artistic director Giampaolo Zennaro, together with leading Argentine tenor Daniel Muñoz, Italian baritone Marco Chingari, bass Javier Roldan, soprano Eleonora Valle and mezzo-soprano Elena Traversi got together on stage to fine-tune their performance.

Under the baton of Joseph Vella, the National Orchestra of Malta will accompany the leading singers including Joseph Aquilina, Charles Vincenti, Albert Buttigieg and the Astra's Opera Chorus led by Maria Frendo.

This Verdi masterpiece, inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy, will only be performed in Gozo once.

Otello takes the audience back to the end of the 15th century in a tangle of love, passion, hatred, deceit, innocence and death. The opera is divided into four acts and was premiered at the Scala theatre in Milan in 1887.

Tickets for the event may be obtained from the Astra on tel. 2155 0985 or by e-mail. Tickets are also available from the Koperattiva Zjarat Kulturali offices in Floriana on tel. 2123 6963 or 2123 6967.

This opera forms part of the second edition of the Mediterranea festival which is being produced by the Astra Theatre in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and Air Malta.
