Racing - Invasor is Horse of the Year

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Invasor captured the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, easily outdistancing Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro.

The Argentine-bred Invasor locked up the award by capturing the Breeders' Cup over Preakness and Travers Stakes winner Bernardini.

Invasor tallied 228 points in voting by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers' Association.

Barbaro, who suffered a devastating leg fracture during the Preakness and continues fighting for his life, was the runner-up with 21 points, followed by Bernardini (16), Lava Man (3) and English-trained Ouija Board (3).

Cricket - New Zealand crush England

New Zealand thrashed England by 90 runs at Adelaide Oval yesterday to register their first win in the one-day international tri-series.

New Zealand were bowled out for 210 in their innings after all-rounder Jacob Oram scored a defiant 86 and Andrew Flintoff took four wickets.

England, in reply, were dismissed for just 120 in the 38th over with New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori taking 4-24.

New Zealand earned a bonus point for their win to leapfrog England into second place in the competition standings behind Australia, who are unbeaten at the halfway stage.

Athletics - French runner arrested

French 1,500 metres record holder Hind Dehiba has been arrested after vials containing human growth hormone, a banned performance-enhancing substance, were found in her luggage, judicial sources said yesterday.

The 27-year-old Dehiba, her husband and coach Fodil and a third athlete whose identity was not revealed were arrested at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport on Monday after returning from a training session in the United States, the sources added.
