Out of context

I refer to the letter by former Floriana mayor Publio Agius (February 26).

One wonders why Mr Agius felt obliged to defend present councillor/colleague Rueben Bonello in this particular letter since, exactly after the Floriana local council sitting held on Monday, April 6, 1998, he had stated, in The Sunday Times, that Floriana's then mayor did not possess a divine right to remain mayor perpetually.

One also wonders why he implied that I had stated that Mr Bonello was not a person of integrity since I never held any such views but had only publicly put on record the Floriana council's official policy as regards traffic management, the more so since councillor/colleague Bonello began to repeat statements which went, and are still, against official council policy.

I, also, admit to not knowing why Floriana's former mayor chose to doubt my contentions in the letter on Floriana traffic (February 19), since everything was put down in concise/crystal clear and documented form. What was unethical in the Floriana local council was when a former Floriana mayor had requested an inquiry against one of his councillor/colleagues following a press report which had appeared in a now defunct Sunday newspaper.

What was unethical was that, when a request for an inquiry was launched, certain Floriana residents present during the council sitting of Friday, April 17, 1998 began to insult one of the Floriana councillors while another, different, councillor present looked on approvingly.
