Outgoing union boss Josef Bugeja could run for Labour

Josef Bugeja has served as the General Workers Union's general secretary since 2015

Outgoing General Workers’ Union general secretary Josef Bugeja said he is “seriously considering” an electoral bid with the Labour Party.

Speaking to Times of Malta on Thursday, Bugeja said many workers and shop stewards have approached him to say that he "still has a lot to give”.

“My heart remains dedicated to social issues and workers’ rights, so I am seriously considering running for election as the next step,” he said.

Bugeja, who lives in Pietà and is from Ħamrun, did not say which districts he plans to run in.

Bugeja has occupied the top post of one of Malta’s two general unions since 2015.

Before that, he was general secretary designate in September 2014 while the late Tony Zarb was still the union’s top official.

In January, Bugeja announced his plans to step down from the role, kick-starting the informal process to appoint a secretary general designate. Kevin Camilleri was appointed to the role in March.

He has yet to formally take over the reins of the union.

The General Workers’ Union and the Labour Party have long been political allies, with most of the union’s officials supporting the party.

Last week, when the Labour Party closed its annual party congress, Bugeja was among the event’s speakers.
