European People's Party (EPP) chairman Hans-Gert Poettering yesterday presented a medallion representing "Europa" and a certificate of thanks to outgoing members of the European Parliament, including observers from the new member states.
These included Mario de Marco and Jason Azzopardi, both Nationalist MPs, who took up the post of observer MEPs on May 1 and will serve until July 20, when the newly elected European Parliament will be inaugurated.
The ceremony took place at the EPP Study Days in Budapest, where Mr Poettering gave the Robert Schuman medal to Joe Mc Carthy, Irish MEP from the Fianna Gail, who has served in the European Parliament since 1979, the year of the first elected European Parliament.
Michael Frendo and Josef Bonnici were the first Maltese EPP observers at the Parliament for the Nationalist Party, having served since May 5 last year.
