Pavements along the main roads in Paceville are to be widened and the streets paved with hard wearing tiles with a view to making them pedestrian-only on weekends, according to the latest phase of the Paceville embellishment plans.
The main square is to be treated as the main focus of the designs, a presentation on which was made at the Westin Dragonara Hotel yesterday.
Environment Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said a project was recently completed in St Augustine Street in which pavements were widened and paved, the road was rebuilt, and electricity bulbs and new street furniture were installed, giving the road a new and modern look.
Another project already tackled was the embellishment of Wilga Street where pavements were built and paved, the road was resurfaced and other work was carried out.
The design for the embellishment of Paceville had to be simple but innovative and contemporary, giving a sense of dynamism, he said.
Particular attention was given to the choice of street furniture, using high technology designs based on stainless steel.
The minister said that as Paceville was a residential area during the day and a centre of entertainment at night, a balance had to be found between the two.
Full consideration was also given to creating more parking spaces for residents.
Electricity fittings would be embedded in the ground, steel electricity poles covered with acrylic were to be installed, together with concrete troughs for plants and flowers, some of which would be surrounded by wooden benches.
