This time five years ago a diamond in the rough was uncovered when the Millennium Chapel first opened its doors, creating a space of tranquillity in the heart of Paceville where it is situated.
"The concept behind the Millennium Chapel was that, in the most popular place of entertainment and in the most noisy spot, we wanted to create an oasis of peace where one could go and take a moment to him or herself," chapel director Fr Hilary Tagliaferro said.
"The chapel also offers a place where people in need of help and counselling can find refuge and assistance at any time."
On Thursday the Millennium Chapel celebrates its fifth anniversary and on the same day, Fr Hilary explained, there will be a ceremony called the Memory Tree of Light.
During this ceremony a tree will be lit up in the name of those who have left this life in unusual circumstances.
"The Christmas period is most difficult for the lonely and for those who have lost a loved one. During the ceremony the names of those lost loved ones will be attached to the tree which will then remain lit up all through the Christmas season," he said.
The chapel organises several events throughout the year and this includes the Christmas season. This month events will include the distribution of hampers to needy families and carol singing on Christmas eve. In keeping with past years, there will also be the traditional lunch for refugees on Christmas Day to be held at WOW.
WOW, or Wishing Other's Well, is the companion centre which serves as the social assistance arm of the Millennium Chapel.
The chapel is run by a foundation of lay people and Augustinian fathers and was built by donations from people from all parts of Malta in response to an appeal for a place of quiet prayer set amidst the busiest night-life on the island.
