'Paranoid drug addict' admits to harassing former partner

The woman scored nine, or in 'added danger', on a risk assessment

A man whose former partner claimed was a drug addict and “paranoid” about her has admitted to harassing the woman after the pair separated.

The woman filed a report at the Domestic Violence Hub in Santa Luċija on Sunday, telling officers she had been in a relationship with the 33-year-old Msida man for a year and three months, police inspector Christian Cauchi explained.

She told the police that the man had an acute drug addiction and was “paranoid” about her, and that the pair had remained in touch after their relationship ended around a month ago.

Last week, however, the woman told him she no longer wanted to have contact with him, following which the man contacted her on Facebook Messenger, threatening and insulting her.

He turned up at the woman’s house on Sunday, with police attending the scene and telling him to leave the scene. The man left but returned later.

The woman scored nine, or as being in “added danger”, on a risk assessment.

Her former partner was later arrested and charged with harassing the woman, causing her to fear that violence would be used against her and of misuse of electronic equipment.

He admitted to all the charges.

The defence requested a pre-sentencing report, which was upheld by the court.

It also requested bail pending sentencing, which was upheld against a surety of €3,000, among other conditions.

Magistrate Marse-Ann Farrugia presided over the court.

Police inspector Christian Cauchi prosecuted.

Lawyer Arthur Azzopardi appeared for the accused.

Lawyers Nicholai Bugeja and Phyllisienne Bugeja appeared for the victim.
