The residents of Pope Alexander VII Junction, Balzan have received a notice from the Balzan local council informing them that the parking of their cars in this street may be in jeopardy.
This was received as a response to the residents' request for a residential parking scheme. The residents' lack of parking space has become accentuated since Casa Antonia, the old people's home, was opened a few years ago. Visitors and staff of this home park their cars at all times of the day. The council has informed the residents that the ADT might remove all parking from this street if they insist on the residential parking scheme.
The residents consider this case an anomaly on the following grounds: First, Casa Antonia has not provided enough parking space for its staff and visitors. The authorities should not shift the problem onto the residents to be solved. In my humble opinion the staff and visitors can park in Wesgha Guzé Aquilina which is a stone's throw away from Casa Antonia.
Secondly, it is a sine qua non that residents' needs are given priority. The rights of the residents in this street should be given first preference regarding parking, as has been done for residents living in Pietà and elsewhere. Is it the ADT that is opposing the residential parking scheme or just the local council shelving the problem?
