Parliamentary Committee on Health to meet again, after 20 months

'Shameful' - PN slams government for failing to convene meeting to discuss 'critical' issues in health sector

The parliamentary committee on health is to resume meetings after a 20 month hiatus following a ruling by the Speaker.

Welcoming the news, the PN said it was “shameful” that the government had failed to convene the committee since October 2023, resulting in a lack of parliamentary discussion on several critical issues affecting the health sector.

The opposition had filed a formal complaint with the speaker on the matter.

Speaker Anglu Farrugia upheld the PN’s complaint and called on the committee chairman, parliamentary secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea “to do his utmost” to ensure the committee meets.

The PN stressed the importance for this committee to meet regularly “as there are numerous pressing  matters in the national health sector that require immediate attention and discussion.” These include the state of mental health in Malta, the condition of local hospitals and various agreements signed by the Minister for Health.
