The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anton Tabone, is leading a parliamentary delegation on an official visit to the People's Republic of China.

The visit is taking place at the invitation extended by the Chinese authorities, following the visit to Malta of a delegation of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, which was led by Tiam Jiyua, Vice Chairman of the Congress, in November 2000.

The Maltese delegation will be visiting Beijing, Xian and Shanghai and will be holding meetings with the standing committee of the National People's Congress and the Foreign Affairs Bureau.

They will also be received by the Vice Premier Qian Qi Chen, Li Peng, chairman of the National People's Congress, as well as the Shaanxi and Shanghai representatives of the National People's Congress.

The members of the parliamentary delegation accompanying the Speaker are Victor Galea Pace, Claude Muscat, Carmelo Abela, Joe Mizzi and Richard Cauchi, Clerk of the House.
