Further to Bishop Nikol Cauchi's call for the need of youth centres and the correspondence that ensued, Alternattiva Demokratika has made this a priority in its local council manifesto.

All AD local council candidates are stressing the need of a renewed participation of civil society towards the well being of the local community. This can also be achieved through the promotion of youth clubs and other centres where youngsters can meet and engage in healthy practices such as sports, drama and other cultural activities.

Among our candidates' proposals, one can mention Michael Briguglio's proposal to revive the Salesian and Villa Schinas youth centres' in Sliema and to create more child-friendly spaces; Chris Mizzi's proposal of creating a youth social centre in Kalkara; Jurgen Balzan's support for youth organisations in San Gwann; Kurt Sansone's proposals for the construction of a sports centre/football ground in Marsascala, together with the revival of the local sailing club; and James Camilleri's involvement in reviving the Lija youth club.

AD's general proposal on this aspect includes the creation or strengthening of local civic centres where citizens can benefit from diverse community services and have free access to information through libraries, databases, internet services and newspapers.

AD local councillors will ensure that the best of the locality will be first and foremost on their agenda and this will include safeguarding the good of the community children and youths.
