Paschalino Cefai remanded in custody for assaulting partner

The repeat offender will be held at Mount Carmel hospital

Paschalino Cefai was on Saturday charged with assaulting his partner and breaching his bail conditions.

Cefai, 46, from Żebbuġ Gozo, is a well-known repeat offender whose rap sheet includes stabbing someone in the Gozo courts.

In his latest brush with the law, Cefai was remanded in custody for allegedly assaulting his partner in Birkirkara.

Police were called to the couple’s residence following reports of a loud argument.

Both Cefai and his partner were reportedly injured during the incident.

Cefai denied the charges and did not request bail.

He will be held in Mount Carmel hospital for medical care.

Cefai is also charged with committing the alleged offences while on bail and subject to various court-imposed conditions in separate criminal proceedings.

The court heard that he had previously been granted bail by different magistrates in cases dating back to 2016, 2022, 2024 and 2026, each time under specific conditions. The prosecution argued that the latest alleged offences constitute a breach of those conditions.

In addition, he faces charges of relapsing, having previously been convicted by the courts, as well as separate accusations of making threats and causing slight injuries in other incidents involving the same woman.

Cefai was represented by lawyers Mario and Nicholas Mifsud.

Last year, Cefai and Mario Mifsud were both charged with threatening each other during a courtroom flare up.

The pair “made peace” during their arraignment.
