I refer to the letter by Marisa Micallef Leyson entitled Air Malta Incidents (September 16).
Air Malta would like to reassure Ms Micallef Leyson that the airline has never, is not compromising and will never compromise the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew. Internal and external investigations are currently underway on the cause of the tyre burst incidents. Notwithstanding the outcome, tyres from the same batches as those of the two flights in question were immediately removed from service.
As the reader knows, EU airlines operate within the regime of EU regulations which give them unrestricted access to markets, destinations and fares (unless they are proved predatory). Therefore apart from the fact that Air Malta is not the authority or the regulator it has neither the means nor the will to restrict any carrier flying to Malta.
Over the years Air Malta has invested time and money to develop its route network that now sees the airline operating to 45 scheduled destinations from Malta. No other airline can offer the Maltese public such a wide and convenient choice.
