Certain Maltese habits are set to be immortalised on board game cards when the local edition of the popular board game Monopoly is launched in October.

Putting money in the bank might have become the order of the day, but players will be taken back in time when it was not unusual to stash cash under a loose floor tile. A message on one of the game's 'Chance' and 'Community Chest' cards tells the player that he has found a €100 note there. Malta's love for the traditional tombola is also expected to feature, with players winning €50.

However, it is not all good news. Carrying a statue along the village streets during the Good Friday procession will cost €20. And having your house blessed will be another €15. Malta's long quest to win the Eurovision could also prove to be a loser, as players must pay €30 to organise the following year's festival.

The local edition of the game will include around six customised cards, which still have to be chosen from the shortlisted 10, Sabrina Mulligan, the brains behind the Malta edition, said.

The game will place 22 familiar locations - including two in Gozo - on the table for make-believe property moguls to buy. Mdina and Valletta will feature, but it is not yet clear which towns will be included. However, players will be able to take a ferry from the capital to Sliema.

The local edition is expected to be distributed in both the US and Australia, where there are a number of Maltese emigrants. And a lucky player may well get €100 from his aunt down under if he plays his cards right.

And for once, the VAT Department will not be treated with contempt as it is giving €40 refunds - proving that it is only a game.
