Taxpayers can start to make their payments and send in their tax forms over the internet thanks to a new service launched yesterday.

Speaking during a press briefing yesterday, IT Minister Austin Gatt said a total of 155,000 government services were being provided electronically every month. An electronic identity card was being used for the security of clients.

Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech said the Inland Revenue Department had been offering online services since 2002.

He said the department always considered information technology as an essential tool to improve its operations and offer a more efficient service to taxpayers.
