Update at 3.40 pm with police statement

A pedestrian was hospitalised on Tuesday after being hit by a car at Independence Avenue, the road which from Pieta' leads up to Floriana.

The accident happened at about 11.30am, causing a traffic jam for cars heading towards Valletta.

In a statement, police said the pedestrian, a 29-year-old Pakistani man, was hit by a Seat Ibiza which a 23-year-old man from Kalkara was driving.

The police said the pedestrian was provided medical aid and taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where it was certified that he was suffering from serious injuries. 

Police investigations are ongoing.
