The national council of the General Workers' Union has expressed concern that nothing concrete has been done on the issue of pensioners, not even in the meetings of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

The council recalled that the GWU was one of the first organisations that presented the government with valid reports on the state of pensions in Malta. However, there had been no positive results, it said.

It expected that in such a delicate subject, measures would not imply the dismantling of a social system that had been built over the years and would not be imposed without consultation.

While the council would continue with its work in this field, it expected the government to declare its plans on pensions reform, it said.
