Pensions calculator is not good enough, consumer lobby notes
Association for Consumer Rights reiterates calls for a national pension tracking system
A consumer rights lobby has renewed calls for a national pension tracking system, arguing that a newly launched online calculator still falls short of giving workers a full picture of their retirement income.
The Association for Consumer Rights said it had been pressing for such a reform since 2022 through resolutions adopted at its annual general meetings, and urged the government to move beyond awareness tools and commit to a system that shows people their full pension position in one place.
At its March 2026 AGM, the association proposed a pension tracking system integrated with Malta’s e-ID infrastructure, saying people should be able to view their projected state pension, occupational pension entitlements, private pension savings and estimated total retirement income through a single national dashboard.
The appeal comes days after the Social Policy Ministry launched the RetireSmart calculator, an online tool that helps users estimate their state pension and gauge any gap between that amount and their desired retirement income.
But ACR said the new platform remains too limited because it does not provide a consolidated, real-time overview of a person’s total retirement income and instead leaves information fragmented across different providers and platforms.
The association also criticised the current system for giving many people meaningful insight into their pension entitlements only when they are nearing retirement, saying this makes it harder for workers to adjust their savings plans early.
“Transparency is not a luxury; it is a responsibility. Citizens must be given timely, clear, and complete information to plan their financial future,” the association said.
ACR said the proposed national system should also include both occupational and personal private pensions, warning that any digital tool that excludes those elements will remain incomplete.
It called on the government to publish a clear timeline for implementation and deliver a fully functional pension tracking platform without further delay.
